ABSTRACT

In Chapter 10 we look at communication and engagement with stakeholders. Project management research and literature continues to tell us that providing a strong narrative, clear articulation of relevant messages through appropriate channels, and welcoming and acting on feedback all help to build understanding of the Vision, Big Picture and benefit of projects in order to align understanding, support and commitment. Yet many project teams still regard communication as peripheral to their role and it is often not planned beyond the launch or start-up activity. It is seen as the tactical ‘sending information and stuff out’ rather than as a strategic way to ensure common understanding and to manage the image of the project and of the organization; a ‘nice to have’ if time and the budget permit.
