YEARN, CRAVE, LONG'. Yearn, crave, and long, as verbs, all mean to desire intensely, but the quality of the desire differs. Long means simply to wish intensely. Yearn, from Anglo-Saxon georn, eager, has a special suggestion of tenderness; crave is used of physical appetite.
