ABSTRACT

This chapter presents case studies that are intended to offer starting points for ideas for teachers and TAs to consider and try, and then develop after evaluating their impact on the children’s progress. Establish a pattern of group or paired activities, to develop oral skills and cooperation. It may be useful to consider paired work with a child of weaker literacy skills, so that the partnership is mutually supportive, and so that Jenny can be the expert in reporting findings and expressing ideas. The school may develop alternative strategies for presentation, e.g. through the use of audio, ICT or any other specialised equipment. For most pupils, classroom behaviour reflects the culture of the whole class: if they perceive that the usual practice is to undermine the lesson with disruptive, well-timed comments, then they will join in.
