ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how persons experiencing disabilities participate in sport and how this participation is communicated. The chapter explains related concepts such as ableism and supercrip. It describes how the media communicates about disability in sport and how those experiencing disabilities perceive this media communication. The chapter also describes how athletes experiencing disabilities use new media to achieve communication goals. Other important issues discussed in the chapter include a section on the Paralympics Games, Oscar Pistorius’s dual participation at the Paralympics and Olympic Games for able-bodied athletes, and then an analysis of Norway’s attempts to create participation fairness for both able-bodied and athletes experiencing disabilities.
