ABSTRACT

Three social concepts of gender, race, and ethnicity are each discussed in some detail in this chapter, as well as their relationships to sport communication. Gender, for instance, is created and recreated during sport communication, and the chapter provides several examples of this. Race is addressed similarly, and particularly on how spectators and fans communicate racism in sport. Media communication of ethnocentrism is also discussed along with examples. A final section provides analysis of regulations that address issues of gender and racism in sport.
