ABSTRACT

Chapter 13 is about crisis and image protection using sport communication. The chapter describes what constitutes crisis in sport and how such crisis impacts sport. A major aspect of the chapter is describing and explaining how effective communication can be in countering crisis situations in sport. This is accomplished through contingency plans put in place prior to a crisis. An example of such a plan is provided, including a model used in repairing image following a crisis. This model of image repair is usable in various crisis contexts involving an athlete or a sporting organization that is domestically based or international. The chapter also addresses the issue of apologia and prior reputation affecting image repair.
