ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the starting points for that conversation, by examining the shared principles between international law and human security. It discusses the ways in which the principles can operate both as a lens through which to evaluate existing international law, and as a framework for its future development. The chapter presents an analysis of why a broad approach to human security is vital for the meaningful realisation of the principles of human security. It engages with a debate, because uncertainty about the content and role of human security discourse may contribute to the lack of engagement by legal minds, and it is important to be clear about how the principles discussed above should be mobilised for the benefit of promoting human security. The chapter explores the transformative potential of human security discourse.
