ABSTRACT
This chapter illustrates some of the practical techniques that teachers need to adopt to support children in developing as enthusiastic and independent readers. We start by outlining two significant strategies: shared and guided reading. We discuss the importance of independent reading time, including reading journals and literature circles, and emphasise the importance of reading aloud. We end with thoughts on organising a classroom environment for reading to enable these practices to take place.
