ABSTRACT
The value of many forms of grammar teaching continues to be in doubt. This chapter reminds us that questions about grammar teaching have been around for a long time. We outline the difference between ‘descriptive’ grammar and ‘prescriptive’ grammar. An examination of the important idea of ‘knowledge about language’ is concluded with the point that playing with language in ways that are meaningful and fun is the key to grammar teaching.
