ABSTRACT

There can be a variety of factors that influence the shifting dynamic of power in the three-way relationship and there are likely to be many occasions where the dynamics are highly complex. The dynamic may reflect the structural positions and/or experiences of oppression of the three individuals in the room or even link back to, or mirror, family relationships. They may also relate to recent experiences of conflict or to the position of power of the individuals in communities. Tribe advises having a wide lens when trying to understand what might be taking place in the triad. The interpreter and therapist keep a dialogue open in the debriefing around the shifting power dynamics in the room. The therapist and interpreter should aim to practice anti-oppressively and be aware at all times of how they might impact on another.
