ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the ways in which the practices of school design produce educational spaces which mediate and shape the practices of teaching and learning when the building is occupied and in turn how the practices of teaching and learning shape the ways in which spaces become places for schooling. Literature about the impact of physical environment suggests that school design can support student achievement. The Design Matters? project developed a methodology for systematically analysing the relationship of school space to the experiences of students, teachers and parents. The Building Schools for the Future literature actively encouraged schools and designs teams to seek inspiration and visit innovative schools in the UK and abroad. Maintaining continuity between different design stages and different stakeholders and preserving leadership is essential to delivering the educational vision of the project throughout the design and construction of a school.
