ABSTRACT

This chapter examines writing, and the teaching of writing, as a way of inquiring into climate change. It explains about place-based writing, creative writing, and persuasive writing. The chapter describes writing about climate change consistent with the Common Core writing standards. It points out the importance of attention to genre, detail, and audience. The chapter focuses on the urgent matter of meaningful ways to write about climate change. Place-based writing invites students to write about their observations, personal connections, and reflections on and about specific places. Place-based writing can also take on critical perspectives and address social change and transition. The research of secondary English students doing place-based writing and research can reveal local information important to understanding climate change and environmental issues relevant to the safety of their communities. Climate refers to the statistics of weather: the average pattern for weather over a period of months, years, decades, or longer in a specific place.
