ABSTRACT

This chapter explores options for students to become involved in mitigating the consequences and adapting to the realities of climate change. It is divided into four main sections: imagining sustainable futures; taking action at the local level; changing the way we eat; and civic and democratic projects. Climate change will not be solved by a superhero using magical powers to round up criminals or disintegrate coal plants with krypton rays. Using the imagination to think about the future can be helpful to taking action in the present. Rita Turner's students imagine positive rather than negative future worlds. Engaging students with local examples of the effects of climate change and ways to take action has repeatedly been shown to impact student attitudes and engagement. Students can also create their own digital storytelling videos about strategies for coping with climate change. The chapter focuses on the importance of teacher's role committed to addressing climate change with your students.
