ABSTRACT
This chapter presents an example of how one might score the results of projective instruments such as the Athlete Apperception Technique (AAT). The major methods that clinicians may use during administration and interpretation of the Thematic Apperception Technique (TAT) can be subsumed into five categories: normative, hero-oriented, intuitive, interpersonal, and perceptual. Clinicians and researchers who use the TAT differ in how they employ the tool as source material for uncovering characteristics of the clients/participants they believe are significant. Henry Murray originally used his personology theory to apply a scoring system, and several other scoring schemes are available. The chapter presents some examples of analysis and interpretation of AAT images using: a content import method, a comparison of responses with the stimulus properties of the image, sport psychology thematic analysis, and psychodynamic interpretations.
