ABSTRACT

This chapter describes one process for building the strategy for organisation, which might be a whole organisation or part of an organisation. In Patterns of Strategy, there are three dimensions to any strategic position: fit, power and time. An aggressive strategy may change most of the elements more or less simultaneously, utterly destabilising the competitor. A collaborative strategy needs agreement on which elements to change and at what speed; unilateral change is normally anti-collaborative. Each of the changes in a Patterns of Strategy element requires a change in capability to deliver it. The plan confirms the set of manoeuvres to be executed and the changes in capability required to deliver them. The plan has four main elements: the capability changes required, validation that the required resource can be made available, development of a measurement system and communication of the strategy to the organisation in order to achieve alignment.
