ABSTRACT

Rose married Jim, a country lad, purchasing a house east of the Don Valley. A daughter, Aileen, was born in 1910, followed by a son, Len, in 1914. Rose had a home and a family. Jim’s work as a steamfitter took him away for months at a time, while Rose’s in-laws would descend on the house and stay whenever they came to the city. They found it strange that Rose had no story to tell, and would pry. The cost of membership in this readymade family was high; it required her to reveal her secrets.
