ABSTRACT

In this chapter the author recollects the memories of his early life. The author's family stayed for a few weeks in Saltsjobaden, suburban seaside resort as his father mended. When the author's father had recovered enough, they took the train to Malmo, where they boarded a plane for Amsterdam via Copenhagen. The next stage of their trip was dangerous, as well they knew: civil planes operating between Copenhagen and Amsterdam had been shot at by German warships, however carefully they skirted German territorial waters. Flights from Europe had been diverted to the Brighton, Hove and Worthing airport. Author's brief time there was interrupted, privately, by his father having another, but this time more damaging stroke; and publicly, by the Battle of Britain. However, as the Battle of Britain was at its most intense, author's mother was advised to move his father out of the range of the bombs.
