ABSTRACT
In this chapter the author recollects the memories of his early life. The author remembers about 1931; ailing Grandfather Benjamin had to give up that roomy flat of his first memories and went to live with his chocolate-dealing daughter. The contents of his home were divided among the siblings. He died four or five years later. Railways were his working life as well as his passion. From adolescence, he had been ambitious to excel in pursuits in which Jews were not prominent – hence no medicine or law, no business or finance – but mechanical and electrical engineering. Electrification, he was convinced, was the future of the railways, however fascinated he may have been by steam engines. He harnessed his passions to ensure that the Polish State Railways would become a fully electrified network and that this would be done with English technology.
