ABSTRACT

The secret to the longevity and popularity of slavery was that all were imprisoned together as a group: neither slave nor master had the language to imagine what was beyond the rich, lush borders of the plantation. Douglass could tell that this new modern social life emerging beyond the borders of the plantation is no panacea or utopia of transparent and equal opportunities. Everyone is a subject of modern media and everyone is affected by these constant troubles of contemporary social life. There are degrees of these issues that affect even the most clear and strident representatives of bona fide political movements. The universal aspect of play resides not so much in its occupational aspects as in its immersive qualities. Immersion refers to absorption in the experience of gaming. The model of sociology that Ritzer employs accurately describes a problem of contemporary social life.
