ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the graduate cohort. This cohort attended the local independent theatre called Ujima to see the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Ruined. The entire cast stayed after the production for a talk-back with the students, but the LC students were so overwhelmed by the content of the play they could not utter a word. The Integrated Hour (IH) activities included two group presentations. Each faculty member submitted a discipline-specific article that all Learning Community (LC) students were required to read for IH. Each faculty member was randomly assigned a group of students who were also assigned to the article that faculty member submitted. These students were to meet with their faculty member to paraphrase the article, identify the main points, connect these points to areas important to first-year students, and develop a plan to present and facilitate a class discussion about the article.
