ABSTRACT

The history of the learning community program at State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo State College is continuing to evolve. The program ebbed and flowed as a result of personnel changes and trial and error. This chapter presents an overview of the program to highlight particular years and accomplishments. A communication course would explore human communication as the basis for personal and social interaction. In 2006, SUNY Buffalo State introduced a new general education program, referred to as Intellectual Foundations. This new program introduced a three-credit course, BSC 101: Foundations of Inquiry. All SUNY Buffalo State students were required to take this course until it was waived by the Provost in 2012. There was tension between opponents of Intellectual Foundations Program and the Unit that oversaw the general education program. Consequently, according to SUNY Buffalo State guidelines, it would focus on consumers and producers of messages and examine interpersonal, organizational, mass, and intercultural communication.
