ABSTRACT

This chapter examines race issues related to law students and law schools. Color-blindness is a concept that calls for eliminating the consideration of race in any decision-making process. Since 1997, the American Civil Rights Institute has campaigned in a number of states advocating for a color-blind society through state ballot initiatives calling for an end to what some call racial preferences and others call affirmative action. Critical race theory (CRT) analyzes short and long-term racial impact by considering its historic social utility as well as present and future effects. CRT is a theory that grounds itself in the analysis of race. CRT is continually gaining traction as a methodological approach. One of CRT’s tenets that are most relevant to the methods is often labeled “unique voices of color” or “legal storytelling”. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
