ABSTRACT

Chapter 6, ‘Evangelical nurture’, outlines the Wesley brothers’ shared family, political, cultural and religious background. An examination of the sermons and the character of their maternal grandfather, Dr Samuel Annesley, an eminent dissenting preacher, provides evidence of the beliefs, values and expectations which they ‘inherited’, many of which appear in their writings and those of their mother. Her writings are the source of a great deal of information about their immediate family, early experience and education.
