ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with the broader trends in the news industry, focusing on the most developments in Anglo-American media, which saw Britons vote to leave the European Union and Americans elect President Donald Trump. It examines in detail how these trends have impacted television news, exploring shifting viewing habits, the rise of politically partisan broadcasting and the prevalence of emotionally driven content in today's bulletins. The chapter investigates how the television news industry is trying to adapt to the new media landscape and whether there are constants, underlying principles and values that can set it apart and ensure its survival in the future. It also examines the strategies and arguments being pursued by the established broadcasters such as the British Broadcasting Company, 'legacy' media with roots in the newspaper industry moving into video, and the new generation of digital-only news outlets.
