ABSTRACT

Digital ethics requires engaging the intersection of moral literacy and digital literacy. Important problems lie at this intersection, including identifying novel ethical issues regarding emerging technologies, analyzing problems about the nature of stakeholders and their autonomy, and understanding a process of ethical decision-making about digital issues. We argue that “trolley problems”—embodied in the example of autonomous vehicles—become more complex in the digital, thanks to the ways that epistemic (knowledge-based) and ethical (value-based) issues are coupled together. Yet, the process of becoming literate in digital ethics requires both epistemic and ethical work.
