ABSTRACT

We explore the ethical implications of embeddedness in our human relationships with technology and discuss how this influences our decisions and behaviors in digital spaces. Such discussions raise questions about the nature and function of identity (at individual and organizational levels both), privacy, and anonymity in relation to digital technology. They also suggest new possibilities for thinking about our relationships with one another and with technology. The types of technologies we use are embedded with the values of the organizations that design them, indirectly influencing broader cultural and societal practices through their widespread adoption. A case study in this chapter focuses on the embedded elderly.
