ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to avoid overloading audiences with too much information. School leaders wants parents to read and understand the information that is most important to them so they can work in partnership with school to achieve the best outcomes for their children. There are a number of times during the year that parents come into the school, such as new parents' meetings, parents' evenings, school plays or events. This is precious time when school leaders have the attention of the parents. Once have identified audience groups, established who is responsible for communicating with them and decided on which communication channels to use, it's time to create 'air traffic control' system. A great way to clearly prioritise communication is to introduce a 'traffic light' system. Just like a real air traffic control tower, this system designates clear roles and responsibilities so that everyone knows which voice to listen to and clashes (or crashes) are avoided and everything 'lands' safely.
