ABSTRACT

I have already spoken of Count Vorontsov-Dashkov, who served as chief of security to Emperor Alexander III at the beginning of his reign and then went on to become minister of the Imperial court. 1 He was succeeded as chief of security by General-Adjutant Cherevin, who enjoyed the favor of both the Emperor and the Empress. Cherevin had only an ordinary education (he was a guards officer), but he had good sense and was a witty man of the world. His manner and speech were quite sharp, which suited the Emperor. I have no doubt that he had occasion to give good advice.
