ABSTRACT
On December 13 [1894], General Iosif Vladimirovich Gurko was unexpectedly replaced by Count Paul Andreevich Shuvalov as governor-general of the Kingdom of Poland. As will be seen, General Gurko’s departure from office was typical of him; it also revealed something of the new Emperor’s character.
