ABSTRACT
As I have already noted, Grand Duke Michael Nikolaevich, one of the younger brothers of Emperor Alexander II, succeeded Prince Bariatinskii as viceroy. The Grand Duke was no stranger to the region, having visited it a few years earlier with his brother Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich, when they were still quite young and unmarried. Although I was only a child at the time I vividly remember their coming to Tiflis.
