ABSTRACT

There was still a war to fight "back in the world." For the first time in American history the returning GIs were not greeted as combat heroes. Nor did they particularly feel like heroes as they formed pressure groups such as Vietnam Veterans Against the War, staged demonstrations, and demanded better breaks from Congress and the Veterans Administration, attuned to veterans from a different era, with different attitudes. The mood of the GIs reflected not only their experience in Vietnam but also the outlook of an entire society fed up with overseas adventurism.
