AlbertGailordHartretiredin1978asprofessorofeconomicsatColumbiaUniversity,wherehehadtaught since1946.Theconstantthemeofhisacademiccareer wasapparentalreadyinhis1936Ph.D.dissertation,"Anticipations,BusinessPlanningandtheCycle."Inevitably, hebecameinterestedinmonetaryeconomics,andhisinfluential1948textMoney,Debt,andEconomicActivitywent throughfoureditions.Heremainsconvincedoftheimportanceofcollectinganddisseminatingeconomicinformation,thebettertoinformandcoordinatebusiness anticipationsofanunknownfuture.Inthisrespecthe worriesaboutthedistortionintoday'sadvertisingand massmedia.
