ABSTRACT

India is "staying the course" toward wished-for goals. In his famous "tryst with destiny" speech, made to parliament "at the midnight hour" of India's freedom on August 14, 1947, Nehru set out those goals in these words:

In the broadest terms the goals were retaining and enhancing a proud independence won by a nationalist struggle; eradicating poverty through industrialization; and removing social and cultural injustice. The means to those ends, and an end in itself, was democracy.
