ABSTRACT

On the eve of the twenty-first century, the merger of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union and the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union brings together two proud and strong unions, to form a new union, rooted in a rich history but committed to innovation. We have a shared tradition of social unionism—activist trade unionism, born of immigrant struggles and the militant organizing of the 1930s and 1940s. We share a common commitment to resisting the exploitation of workers: organizing the unorganized, building unity out of diversity, and pioneering labor-management partnerships to better workers’ lives.
