ABSTRACT
Many of the border disputes that now plague the post-Soviet states are a reflection of changes in the ethnodemographic picture since the time the inter-republican borders were drawn. For a long time, of course, those boundaries were purely administrative dividers rather than borders between sovereign entities. In some areas of the country, especially in Central Asia and Siberia, borders between the newly created national-territorial units were drawn without historic precedents.
