Hourlywages,ininflation-adjustedterms,fellmorethan 9%between1980and1989.Hourlybenefits,suchaspensionsandhealthinsurance,fellevenmore,by13.8%.However,becauseofincreasesinannualhoursworkedbythe averageworker,annualwagesinthelate1980swerethe sameasin1979,despitethedropinhourlywages.Thus, underlyingthemodestfamilyincomegrowthinrecent yearshasbeenapopulationworkinglongerhoursatlower wages.
