ABSTRACT
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Islam’s presence in Russia has vastly expanded. This expansion is reflected in the development of Islam’s physical and intellectual infrastructure and in Muslims’ rising awareness of their religious and cultural traditions and heritage. Meanwhile, because of a general decentralization in the Russian Federation and increased contacts with the Islamic world, Russian Islam has become organizationally, intellectually, and politically more diverse and complex.
