ABSTRACT
Indeed, why not infant labor? What is the infant in the picture doing? Literally, he is playing with a strawberry. In imitative fashion, he is hulling it, and eventually he may actually get a good portion of it hulled, at which time he will playfully toss it in his mother’s bucket. What’s wrong with this picture? How is this picture different from one of a child of the same age, sitting at the edge of his mother’s garden, snapping beans, and tossing them in his mother’s bucket? Early in the twentieth century, no one saw a significant difference (Figure 9.1).
