ABSTRACT

Appreciating the complexity of matching cars to drivers, this chapter takes refuge in the relatively analytic harbor of cost analysis. We will approach the automobile as a momentous item mainly on account of its unforgettable expenses: acquisition, maintenance, repair, depreciation, insurance, gas, oil, and so on. This distillation of things should result in a significant gain for most readers, as the costs of owning and operating cars are widely misunderstood, routinely underestimated, and crucial to sound decision making.
