ABSTRACT

Surveying Japan's financial marketplace, the observer is often surprised to find foreign, usually American, firms occupying large and profitable market positions, as well as smaller, but still highly profitable niches, in principal business segments. The observer may be further surprised to learn that a company has occupied its leading position for many years and that, outside of the United States, Japan is the largest and most profitable marketplace for the company's services. In the preceding chapter we examined the business operations of two companies, American Express and Associates First Capital. Below we will look at several more companies for which the Japanese market already is, or promises to be, their biggest and most lucrative market outside the United States.
