Evidence has mounted of increasingly open disgruntlement among villagers in many parts of the Chinese countryside, sometimes erupting in riots. Such incidents of violence have been recorded not just in parts of the country where fanners are straining to make ends meet, but even in richer districts. Why this widespread local political discontent?
