Why bother, then? Because with natural attrition, plant shutdowns, the sending of American jobs offshore, and the loss of jobs to "smart" automation, Labor has no choice. Because research correlates union membership with economic and political power, shrinking rolls mean shrinking clout, which means shrinking gains.
