While hardly any of them would recognize the title, many union activists are actually amateur futurists. They endlessly scan the horizon, looking for clues of consequence. Will the employer remain competitive? Will "smart" automation cost more jobs? Will a corporate raider take over? Will overseas competition intensify? Should a contract reopener be exercised? Should the local buy high-powered computer equipment?
