Differently True: Toyoda's A Strange Tale from East of the River(1960)

Such a literary work seems unlikely to attract the attention of filmmakers, whose strategy relies so much on character and narrative development. Yet two directors have taken up the challenge offered by Kafu's seemingly eventless novel: Shiro Toyoda in 1960 and Kaneto Shindo in 1991.
