ABSTRACT
Saisei Muro's "Ani Imoto" (Older brother, younger si ster) was given the prestigious Literary Confab Club Award the year after it was published in 1934. In retrospect, it is easy to see how this story spoke to the zeitgeist of a Japan caught up in its version of worldwide depression and social upheaval.
