Bank Mergers and Regulatory Policy from the 1960s to the 1990s

Regulatory policy toward bank mergers and consolidation can be divided into three phases in recent V.S. history: 1966 to 1981; 1982 to the present; and a new regulatory phase, which is emerging now. This section describes the first regulatory regime; the next sections summarize some subsequent changes in banking and explore the second regulatory regime. Chapter 4 examines the emerging third regulatory phase.
