ABSTRACT

A second ECLAC report (CEPAL 1993b, 87-98) analyzes the influence of family organization on children's school performance when the household per capita income and the average years of schooling of family members are held constant, combining the two variables into twelve strata. Three indicators of family organization are: female or male head of household, extended or nuclear families, and legal marriage or marital union. School performance is measured by the average years of schooling of two subpopulations: children ten to fourteen years old and young dependent people fifteen to twenty-four years old living in the household.
