ABSTRACT

Despite advances already achieved, Brazilian education is still far from satisfactory, particularly in qualitative terms. This means there is still a relative lag between society's growing expectations and the public system's real shortterm capacity to satisfy them. However, aside from the demand on public authoriti,es to expand educational supply and improve its quality, Brazil must cope with still other educational challenges now common to all countries, independent of their respective development levels. These are difficulties borne of the process of globalization and the speed of technological innovation.
