ABSTRACT
This book primarily addresses economic issues and economic policy questions concerning China; it is not a discussion of Chinese politics and China's government. Nonetheless, in order to gain a full understanding of key economic issues, it is important to be familiar with both the political situation and the basic policymaking institutions in China. This chapter attempts to meet those needs, but if the reader is interested primarily in those issues, he or she will probably want to look elsewhere.
