In1978,Chinaembarkeduponthegreatesteconomicexperiment inmodernhistory.DengXiaopinglaunchedaboldefforttoreformChina'seconomyandopeneconomictieswiththenoncommunistworld.ThiseffortinvolvedinjectingmoremarketeconomicsintoChina'smoribundcommunistsystemandcreating SpecialEconomicZones(SEZs)tostimulatetradewithwestern countries.1Thesepolicieshavecreatedsomethingakintoamoderndaygoldrush,withwesternbusinessesinvestingheavilyin China.DespitesetbackslikeTiananmenSquare,thelookand cultureofsouthernChinahasbeenfundamentallyandprobably irreversiblychangedbytheseevents.
